TV Tables: How to Choose the Right Size and Style

A TV table does more than hold a television. It organises the media equipment around it, provides storage for remotes, games consoles and cables, and anchors the main wall of a living room. Getting the width, height and storage right makes a significant difference to how the room functions and how tidy it stays.

Width is the first consideration and it is directly related to your TV size. As a general rule, your TV table should be at least as wide as the TV itself and ideally wider, so the television does not overhang the edges. For a 55 inch TV, a unit of at least 120cm to 130cm wide works well. For a 65 inch TV, aim for 140cm or more.

Height matters for viewing comfort. The centre of the screen should sit at roughly eye level when you are seated, which for most sofas means a TV height of between 95cm and 115cm from the floor. A standard TV table at 40cm to 50cm tall combined with a TV of 60cm to 70cm in height typically puts the screen centre at around 70cm to 85cm, which works well for most seating arrangements.

Storage is where TV tables vary most. Open shelves give easy access to equipment and good ventilation for electronics but show clutter. Closed cabinets hide cables and equipment but can restrict airflow for consoles and receivers. A combination of open and closed storage tends to give the best of both.
