Outdoor Dining Chairs

Getting the right outdoor dining chairs comes down to three things: how they will hold up in British weather, how comfortable they are for a long lunch, and whether they actually fit your space.

Material makes the biggest difference to longevity. Powder-coated steel and aluminium frames resist rust and can handle year-round outdoor exposure with minimal upkeep. Synthetic PE rattan is another reliable choice, as it will not crack or fade the way natural rattan does, while still keeping that relaxed garden feel. Hardwood options like acacia or eucalyptus are heavier and more substantial, but they do need occasional oiling to stay in good condition.

Comfort matters more outdoors than people expect. Without the soft furnishings of an indoor dining room, seat depth, back angle, and cushion quality become more important. Look for chairs with a seat depth of at least 40cm and a slightly reclined backrest, as these are far more comfortable over a long meal than flat, upright designs.

Think about storage too. If your garden does not have a shed or large storage area, stackable chairs are a practical solution that lets you free up space when the chairs are not in use. Folding designs are similarly space-efficient and easier to bring indoors when the weather turns.

Matching chairs to your table is not just about aesthetics, as seat height matters too. Most standard outdoor dining tables sit at around 74 to 76cm, so look for chairs with a seat height of 44 to 47cm to ensure a comfortable fit. If your table has a thick top or an unusual height, measure before buying.

Cushions can make a big difference to comfort, but check whether they are included or sold separately, and whether the covers are removable and machine washable. It is an easy feature to overlook but very useful outdoors.
