Extendable Dining Tables: Everyday Compact, Occasionally Generous

An extendable dining table is one of the most practical pieces of furniture you can buy for a dining room or kitchen. At its standard size it seats four comfortably and fits most rooms without dominating the space. Pull out the extension leaf and it seats six, eight or more, making it the right choice for anyone who entertains occasionally but does not want a large table sitting mostly empty day to day.

There are two main extension mechanisms. A butterfly leaf folds out from the centre of the table and requires no separate storage, which makes it the more convenient option for frequent use. A removable leaf gives a cleaner look when stored away but requires somewhere to keep the leaf when not in use. Both mechanisms are reliable; the choice comes down to how often you extend the table and whether storage space for a leaf is available.

Round extendable dining tables are particularly well suited to smaller dining rooms. A round table of 100cm to 110cm seats four comfortably in a modest space; extended to 140cm or 150cm it can seat six. The absence of corners makes round tables easier to move around and gives the room a more relaxed feel than a rectangular arrangement.

For a fixed table that will always seat six or more, see our full dining tables range. For round options specifically, browse our round dining tables. To complete your dining setup, see our dining tables and chairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most extendable dining tables work by pulling the two halves of the table apart to reveal a central gap, into which an extension leaf is inserted or unfolded. Butterfly leaf tables have the leaf stored inside the table and fold out automatically as the table is opened. Drop leaf tables have hinged sections on either side that fold down when not needed.

Most extendable dining tables seat 4 at their standard size and extend to seat 6 or 8. Larger models can extend to seat 10 or more. The number of seats depends on the table length at full extension and the size of the chairs, so always check the extended dimensions and calculate seating based on 60cm per person.

A well-made extendable dining table is just as sturdy as a fixed table. The extension mechanism adds complexity to the construction, so quality varies more between manufacturers than with fixed tables. Look for solid wood or metal extension mechanisms and check that the table sits level and stable at both its standard and extended sizes.

An extendable table pulls apart at the centre to accommodate an additional leaf, increasing the table length. A drop leaf table has hinged sections on the sides that fold down when not in use, reducing the table width rather than length. Drop leaf tables are more compact when folded and suit very small spaces; extendable tables provide more seating capacity at full size.

Start with the extended size you need and work backwards. If you want to seat 6 comfortably, you need a table of at least 180cm when extended. Check that the standard, closed size fits your room with 90cm clearance on all sides for everyday use. Most extendable tables add between 40cm and 60cm in length when the leaf is inserted.
