Dining Tables: How to Choose the Right Size, Shape and Material

A dining table is one of the most used pieces of furniture in a home. It is where meals are eaten, work gets done, homework is finished and conversations happen. Getting the size right is the single most important decision, and it is easier to get wrong than most people expect.

The standard rule is to allow 60cm of table width per person seated and at least 90cm of clear space around all sides of the table for chairs to pull out and people to move freely. For a dining room of 3m x 3.5m, a table of around 180cm x 90cm works comfortably for six people with room to move. Measure your room and subtract the clearance before settling on a size.

Shape has a significant effect on how a dining table fits a room. Rectangular tables are the most common and suit longer, narrower dining rooms. Round tables encourage conversation and work well in square rooms or smaller spaces, as there are no corners to navigate. Oval tables combine the length of a rectangle with the softer feel of a round, and work well in rooms where a rectangular table would feel too angular.

Material is largely a matter of style and practicality. Oak and solid wood tables are hardwearing and develop character over time, making them a sound long-term investment. Glass tables open up a space visually and suit modern or contemporary interiors but require regular cleaning. Marble and stone effect tops make a strong statement and suit more formal dining rooms.

If you regularly host more guests than your table can seat, an extendable dining table is worth considering. To complete your dining setup, browse our dining tables and chairs range or see our round dining tables if a circular layout suits your room.

Frequently Asked Questions

For 6 people seated comfortably, you need a dining table of at least 180cm long and 90cm wide. Allow around 60cm of table length per person and ensure there is at least 90cm of clear space around all sides of the table for chairs and movement. In a smaller room, an extendable table that seats 4 and extends to 6 is a practical alternative.

Most dining tables in the UK are between 74cm and 76cm tall, which suits standard dining chairs with a seat height of 44cm to 48cm. This leaves a comfortable gap of around 28cm to 30cm between the seat and the underside of the table. Always check the table height alongside your chosen chairs before purchasing.

A round table is generally the best choice for a small dining room as it takes up less visual space, has no corners to navigate and allows more people to sit around it relative to its footprint. A small rectangular table of 120cm x 75cm is another practical option where a round table does not suit the room shape.

Solid oak and hardwood dining tables are the most durable option for everyday family use. They are resistant to knocks and scratches, easy to maintain and can be refinished if needed. Glass and marble tops are striking but more prone to showing marks and damage. For busy family dining rooms, a solid wood table is the most practical long-term choice.

Allow at least 90cm of clear space between the edge of the dining table and the nearest wall or piece of furniture. This gives enough room for chairs to be pulled out fully and for people to move around the table comfortably. In rooms where space is tight, 75cm is a workable minimum but will feel snug.
