Bunk Bed Mattresses: Why Thickness Is the Most Important Specification

Buying a mattress for a bunk bed is not the same as buying a standard single mattress. The most important specification is depth, and getting it wrong has safety implications rather than just comfort ones. Understanding why thickness matters will help you choose correctly.

Most bunk beds are designed with a maximum mattress depth in mind, and this is directly tied to the height of the safety guard rail on the top bunk. The guard rail is only effective when it extends sufficiently above the mattress surface to prevent a child from rolling out. If the mattress is too deep, it sits too high within the frame and reduces the effective height of the guard rail, which can create a safety risk.

The general recommendation for bunk bed mattresses is a depth of no more than 17cm, with 15cm being a common maximum for many bunk frames. Some beds specify even less, particularly those with shorter guard rails or compact frame designs. Always check the bunk bed manufacturer's guidance on maximum mattress depth before buying, as this takes priority over any general recommendation.

In terms of mattress type, foam and memory foam mattresses have a practical advantage for bunk beds: they are significantly lighter than pocket sprung options, which makes changing bedding on the top bunk considerably easier. This is a day-to-day practicality that is easy to overlook but makes a real difference for whoever is responsible for making the beds.

Pocket sprung bunk bed mattresses are available and provide better support and breathability than foam, but the added weight can make top bunk maintenance more cumbersome. For the bottom bunk, which is easier to access, a pocket sprung or hybrid mattress at the correct depth is a good choice if a more supportive sleeping surface is preferred.
