Corner sofas are the most in-demand sofa type in the UK, and it is easy to see why. They maximise seating without requiring two separate pieces of furniture, they define a living room layout more clearly than a standard sofa, and the L-shape naturally creates a comfortable viewing angle for a TV without anyone having to crane their neck.

The first decision to get right is orientation. Corner sofas come in left-hand and right-hand configurations, which refers to which side the chaise or longer section falls when you are seated and facing the sofa. Getting this wrong is one of the most common buying mistakes, so measure your room carefully and establish which layout works with your existing layout and door positions before choosing.

Size varies considerably across the category. A compact corner sofa might have an overall footprint of around 220 x 150cm, while a larger family-sized model could be 300 x 200cm or more. The key measurement is not just the overall size but the depth of the chaise section, which determines whether it can genuinely be used as a lounging area or only as a seat.

Modular corner sofas, where individual sections are connected rather than being built as one fixed piece, offer practical advantages at the buying stage and beyond. They are easier to deliver into awkward spaces, and they can be reconfigured if you move home or rearrange the room. The trade-off is that the joins between sections can sometimes be noticeable, particularly in firmer fabrics.

Fabric choice on a corner sofa has a bigger impact than on a smaller piece, simply because there is more of it. A bold fabric or colour on a large corner sofa will dominate a room, which can work brilliantly if that is the intention, but is harder to live with if tastes change. Neutral tones and classic fabrics like linen, woven cotton, or a mid-toned grey are the safer long-term choice for a large, central piece of furniture.
