Console Tables: Slim, Practical and Harder Working Than They Look

A console table is one of the most underrated pieces of furniture in a home. Slim in profile and typically rectangular, it fits against a wall or behind a sofa and provides a surface that earns its place in almost any room without demanding much space in return.

In a hallway, a console table is usually the first piece of furniture a visitor sees. It sets the tone for the rest of the home and provides a practical surface for keys, post and everyday items. A drawer or shelf underneath adds useful storage without adding bulk. Pair with a mirror above and a lamp to either side and the hallway becomes a proper entrance rather than just a corridor.

In a living room, a console table placed behind a sofa defines the back of a seating arrangement in an open plan space, acting as a subtle room divider without blocking sightlines. It can also work against a wall as an alternative to a sideboard, particularly in narrower rooms where a full-depth cabinet would feel too imposing.

Depth is the key dimension to check before buying. Most console tables are between 25cm and 40cm deep, which keeps them close to the wall without protruding into the room. In a hallway, measure the available width carefully and allow enough clearance to pass comfortably on either side.

For a wider storage option, see our sideboards. For a smaller surface option, browse our side tables or lamp tables.

Frequently Asked Questions

A console table is a slim, wall-mounted or freestanding table used to provide a surface in a hallway, living room or behind a sofa. Common uses include holding a lamp, keys and everyday items in a hallway, acting as a display surface in a living room, or defining the back of a sofa arrangement in an open plan space.

A standard console table is typically between 100cm and 140cm wide, 25cm to 40cm deep and 75cm to 85cm tall. Narrower options of 80cm to 100cm are available for tighter hallways. Always measure your available wall space and the depth of the gap before ordering, particularly in hallways where clearance is limited.

A sideboard is typically deeper and wider than a console table and provides significantly more enclosed storage, usually with doors and drawers. A console table is slimmer and shallower, designed primarily as a surface rather than a storage unit. Console tables suit hallways and behind sofas; sideboards work better in dining rooms and living rooms where storage capacity is needed.

A classic console table arrangement includes a lamp for height, a decorative object or vase for interest and a practical item like a tray for keys or post. In a hallway, keep the surface relatively clear so it stays functional. In a living room or behind a sofa, you have more freedom to use it as a display surface.

A console table can work as a compact desk in a pinch, particularly for light tasks like writing or using a laptop. However, most console tables are shallower than a desk and do not provide knee clearance underneath, so extended use as a working surface is not ideal. A purpose-built desk is a better long-term solution for home working.
