Salt Lamps

Salt lamps are carved from chunks of Himalayan rock salt, typically mined in the Punjab region of Pakistan, and fitted with a small bulb inside that illuminates the natural crystal from within. The result is a warm, amber-toned glow that is softer and more diffuse than most conventional light sources, making them a popular choice for bedrooms and relaxation spaces.

Each salt lamp is slightly different in shape, size, and tone because the material is entirely natural. The colour can range from pale pink through to deep amber and rust, depending on the mineral content of the crystal. This means no two lamps are exactly alike, which is part of their appeal as a decorative object as much as a light source.

They work best in spaces where you want soft, low-level ambient light rather than functional task lighting. A salt lamp on a bedside table, a bathroom shelf, or a living room side table adds a warm focal point without dominating the room. The glow is similar in tone to candlelight, which makes it particularly effective in the evening.

Salt lamps do require a small amount of maintenance. Because Himalayan salt is hygroscopic, it naturally absorbs moisture from the surrounding air, which can cause the surface to become slightly damp or to sweat in humid environments. Keeping the lamp switched on regularly helps to evaporate this moisture, and storing it in a dry place when not in use will prevent the base from becoming wet.

In terms of size, smaller lamps of around 1 to 2kg are suited to bedside tables and shelves, while larger lamps of 3kg or more produce a stronger glow and work better as a feature piece in a living room or hallway.
