Table Lamps

A good table lamp does two things at once: it lights a space and it adds to the look of it. Unlike overhead lighting, which tends to flatten a room, a well-placed table lamp creates pools of warm light that make a space feel more considered and lived-in.

Height and scale matter more than people expect. A lamp that is too small will look lost on a large sideboard or console table, while one that is too tall can overpower a bedside table or feel intrusive at eye level when seated. As a rough guide, the bottom of the lampshade should sit at roughly eye level when you are sitting beside it, and the total height of the lamp and shade together should not exceed the height of the surface it sits on plus about 60cm.

Base material has a significant effect on the overall style. Ceramic table lamps are among the most versatile, available in everything from simple white and neutral finishes to hand-painted and textured designs that work as decorative objects in their own right. Brass and gold finishes have become a consistently popular choice for living rooms and bedrooms, adding a warm metallic note that pairs well with both neutral and richer colour schemes. Glass bases work well in lighter, more minimal interiors.

The lampshade is just as important as the base. A drum shade gives a clean, contemporary look, while empire and tapered shades are more traditional. Linen and cotton shades diffuse light softly, making them a good choice for bedside use. If the lamp is going in a living room where you want more directed light for reading, a shade with an open bottom will give better output.

Table lamps are also one of the easiest ways to update the look of a room without changing the furniture. Swapping out a base or simply changing the shade can shift the feel of a bedside table or sideboard considerably, which makes them a practical investment even when tastes change.
