Storage Beds with Side Drawers

A bed with side drawers solves one of the most persistent challenges in UK bedrooms: where to put things when wardrobe and floor space is already stretched. Under-bed space is consistently underused in bedrooms without built-in storage, and a drawer bed puts that space to work in the most directly accessible way possible.

Unlike ottoman beds, which require the mattress to be lifted to access the storage underneath, drawer beds give you immediate access at any time without disturbing the bed. The drawers slide out from the side of the frame at floor level, making them practical for items that need to be reached regularly, such as spare bedding, extra pillows, seasonal clothing, or shoes.

Drawer configuration varies between designs. Some beds offer two large drawers on one side, which suits those who only have access from one side of the bed or who prefer fewer, larger storage spaces. Other designs offer four drawers, two on each side, which distributes storage more evenly and suits couples who each want their own dedicated space.

In terms of style, drawer beds are available across the same range of designs as other bed frames. Upholstered drawer beds with fabric headboards are the most common, with wooden and metal drawer frame options also available. The drawer mechanism is housed entirely within the bed base and does not visually affect the frame above it.

One practical point worth checking is whether the drawers require clearance space to open fully. Most side drawer beds need around 50 to 60cm of clear floor space alongside the bed to allow the drawers to pull out completely. In rooms where the bed sits close to a wall on one side, an ottoman bed may be more practical.
