Small Double Beds

A small double bed at 120 x 190cm is one of the most underrated bed sizes in the UK. It is regularly overlooked in favour of the standard double, but for a significant number of room setups and sleeping situations, it is actually the better choice.

For a solo sleeper, a small double gives around 30cm more width than a single bed, which translates to noticeably more freedom of movement during the night without the full footprint of a standard double. In a bedroom where the extra 15cm of a full double would leave the room feeling crowded or reduce clearance around the bed to an uncomfortable minimum, the small double solves the problem cleanly.

Guest rooms are one of the strongest use cases for a small double. It gives one adult a genuinely comfortable sleep and handles two adults at a push, while leaving more floor space in the room than a standard double would. For rooms that double as a study or home office, that extra floor space often makes the difference between the room feeling functional and feeling cramped.

Teenagers transitioning out of a single bed sometimes find a small double to be the right intermediate step, particularly in rooms where a standard double would fill too much of the available space. The extra width compared to a single is appreciated, and the smaller overall footprint keeps the room feeling like the teenager's space rather than a bedroom dominated by the bed.

Upholstered designs in panel, wingback, and chesterfield headboard styles are all available, as are ottoman storage small doubles, which are particularly practical given that the size lends itself to rooms where maximising every centimetre of storage is a priority.
