Ottoman Beds

An ottoman bed stores more than any other bed type at the same price point. The entire base of the frame lifts on a gas-assisted mechanism to reveal a storage space that runs the full length and width of the bed, giving you access to an area that typically ranges from around 150 to 400 litres depending on size. Unlike drawer beds, which give you a fixed number of drawers on either side, an ottoman base gives you one uninterrupted space that can hold duvets, pillows, seasonal clothing, or any bulkier items that need somewhere to live.

The gas lift mechanism is what makes the design practical day to day. Rather than requiring you to physically lift a heavy base, the gas pistons do the work, making the base easy to raise and hold open while you access the storage. Most quality ottoman beds hold the base open without needing to be propped, so you can access and reorganise the contents with both hands free.

One of the more important decisions when buying an ottoman bed is whether to choose a side-lift or end-lift configuration. A side-lift bed opens from one of the long sides, which means you need clearance alongside the bed to raise the base fully. An end-lift opens from the foot of the bed, which is more useful if you have limited space on either side but clear floor space at the end. In most bedrooms, side-lift is the more common choice, but it is worth thinking through your specific room layout before deciding.

Ottoman beds are available in the same size range as standard beds. In the UK, double ottoman beds at 135 x 190cm are the most common choice, followed by king size ottoman beds at 150 x 200cm, which have become increasingly popular as people prioritise storage in larger bedrooms. Small double ottoman beds suit guest rooms where storage is needed but floor space is limited.

In terms of style, upholstered ottoman beds dominate the category. Wingback, panel, and chesterfield headboards are all available in ottoman base designs, as are boucle and teddy fabric finishes that have grown considerably in popularity. The ottoman mechanism sits entirely within the base structure and does not affect the headboard design, so you can choose the aesthetic independently of the storage function.
