Lava lamps work by heating a wax compound using a light bulb at the base. As the wax warms, it becomes less dense than the surrounding liquid and rises, then cools near the top and sinks back down, creating the flowing motion.
Most lava lamps take between 30 and 60 minutes to warm up fully before the wax begins to move. This warm-up time is normal and depends on the size of the lamp and the room temperature.
It is not recommended to leave a lava lamp on for more than eight to ten hours at a time, as overheating can cause the wax to become too fluid and stop moving properly. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines.
Smaller lamps of around 30 to 40cm suit desks and shelves, while larger models of 50cm or more make more of a statement as a feature piece on a sideboard or in a living room.
Yes, lava lamps are safe for normal household use. They should not be shaken or moved while warm, as this can cause the wax to break up. Keep them out of reach of young children and away from direct sunlight, which can affect the fluid.
