L Shaped Sofas

An L shaped sofa and a corner sofa are essentially the same thing described differently, but the distinction matters in how people think about their living room. The L-shape description emphasises the layout and the visual geometry of the piece, which is often what people are thinking about when they are planning a room rather than shopping for furniture.

The L-shape works because it uses the corner of a room efficiently. Rather than leaving the corner as dead space behind a standard sofa, an L-shape fills it and turns it into usable seating. This is particularly effective in square rooms, where a straight sofa leaves awkward empty space in the corners that is difficult to furnish meaningfully.

In open-plan spaces, an L shaped sofa can do the additional job of defining a seating zone without the need for a physical divider. Positioning the back of the longer section to face the kitchen or dining area creates a natural boundary that separates the living space from the rest of the room without closing it off.

Configuration is the practical starting point. The longer section of the L, sometimes called the chaise, can be on the left or right side of the sofa when viewed from the front. The right configuration depends on the specific layout of your room, where the TV is positioned, and which direction natural light comes from. Getting this wrong is a common and frustrating mistake, so sketch out your room to scale before deciding.

Depth of the chaise section is a specification worth paying close attention to. A chaise of around 85 to 95cm in depth is comfortable for sitting but not deep enough to lie down properly. A depth of 100cm or more is genuinely comfortable for lounging, which is often what people buying an L-shape sofa are looking for. Check this measurement specifically rather than relying on the overall sofa dimensions.
