Double Beds: Choosing the Right Frame for the Most Important Piece of Furniture in Your Bedroom

A double bed at 135 x 190cm is the most commonly purchased bed size in the UK, and for good reason. It fits comfortably in most standard-sized bedrooms, provides adequate sleeping space for couples who sleep relatively still, and is available in the widest range of frame styles, designs, and price points of any bed size.

The choice of double bed frame is more consequential than many people give it credit for. The bed is the largest piece of furniture in the bedroom and the one that most anchors the room's aesthetic. A bed with the wrong proportions for the room, a headboard that clashes with the overall scheme, or a frame that is not practical for how the room is used can undermine an otherwise well-considered bedroom.

Storage is one of the most important functional considerations with a double bed. Ottoman double beds are by far the most popular storage option, giving access to the full under-bed area in one smooth lift. Double beds with drawers offer more immediate access for items needed regularly. In rooms where floor space is at a premium and wardrobe space is limited, choosing a storage double bed from the outset is significantly more practical than retrofitting under-bed storage boxes later.

Headboard style has a substantial effect on how the bedroom reads as a space. A tall wingback headboard creates a sense of occasion and makes the bed the clear focal point of the room. A lower panelled headboard sits more quietly and suits rooms where other elements are meant to take more visual prominence.

Fabric choice on a double bed frame is a long-term commitment worth thinking through carefully. Velvet in a neutral grey or navy is a consistent choice. Boucle and textured weaves are strong at the moment and suit contemporary bedroom schemes. For those who want more space, see our king size beds.
