For 6 people seated comfortably, you need a dining table of at least 180cm long and 90cm wide. Allow around 60cm of table length per person and ensure there is at least 90cm of clear space around all sides of the table for chairs and movement. In a smaller room, an extendable table that seats 4 and extends to 6 is a practical alternative.
Most dining tables in the UK are between 74cm and 76cm tall, which suits standard dining chairs with a seat height of 44cm to 48cm. This leaves a comfortable gap of around 28cm to 30cm between the seat and the underside of the table. Always check the table height alongside your chosen chairs before purchasing.
A round table is generally the best choice for a small dining room as it takes up less visual space, has no corners to navigate and allows more people to sit around it relative to its footprint. A small rectangular table of 120cm x 75cm is another practical option where a round table does not suit the room shape.
Solid oak and hardwood dining tables are the most durable option for everyday family use. They are resistant to knocks and scratches, easy to maintain and can be refinished if needed. Glass and marble tops are striking but more prone to showing marks and damage. For busy family dining rooms, a solid wood table is the most practical long-term choice.
Allow at least 90cm of clear space between the edge of the dining table and the nearest wall or piece of furniture. This gives enough room for chairs to be pulled out fully and for people to move around the table comfortably. In rooms where space is tight, 75cm is a workable minimum but will feel snug.
