Synthetic PE rattan and powder-coated aluminium are the most weather-resistant materials for UK gardens. Both withstand rain, UV exposure, and temperature changes without significant deterioration. Hardwoods like teak and eucalyptus are also durable but require occasional oiling to maintain their condition.
Frames made from PE rattan, aluminium, and hardwood can generally be left outside year-round. Cushions should be brought indoors or stored in a weatherproof box during prolonged wet periods or winter to maintain their condition.
Allow at least 60cm of table space per person and ensure there is enough clearance around the table to pull chairs out comfortably. For a standard patio, a 4-seater set typically works well, while larger terraces suit 6 or 8-seater configurations.
Synthetic PE rattan sets are designed to be weatherproof and can handle rain and UV exposure. Natural rattan is not suitable for outdoor use. Always confirm the material is PE rattan rather than natural rattan before buying for an outdoor space.
Use a fitted weatherproof furniture cover to protect the frame and any cushions during winter. Store loose cushions in a shed or weatherproof storage box. Wipe down frames with a damp cloth before covering to prevent mould build-up over the colder months.
