All Dining Furniture

A dining room works when the furniture is in proportion, the seating is comfortable enough to stay at the table, and the overall scheme feels like it belongs in the house rather than being installed in it. Getting those three things right is mostly a matter of starting with the right table and building outward from there.

Table size is the anchor decision. As a rough guide, allow around 60cm of table width per person for comfortable dining, and ensure there is at least 90cm of clearance between the edge of the table and any wall or piece of furniture to allow chairs to be pulled out fully. A table that is technically large enough but leaves no room to move around it will make the dining room feel cramped every time it is used.

Chair choice is where most of the character of a dining room comes from. Matching chairs create a clean, unified look that is easy to get right. Mixing chair styles, such as upholstered side chairs along the length of the table and statement carvers at each end, adds more personality and is an approach that has become increasingly common in UK dining rooms. The key constraint is seat height: always check that the chairs sit at the right height for the table, with a gap of around 25 to 30cm between the seat and the underside of the table top.

Benches are a practical alternative to dining chairs on one or both sides of a dining table, particularly in households with children or in kitchens where a bench can tuck fully under the table when not in use. They also allow a table to seat more people at short notice without needing additional chairs.

Dining furniture does not need to match in material or finish to work together. A wooden table with fabric dining chairs, or a marble-effect table top with metal-framed seating, can create a more layered and considered look than a matched set. The common thread that ties mixed dining furniture together is usually scale and proportion rather than material.
